REJUVENATED Irvine Meadow striker Paul Maxwell is hoping his side can end the season with silverware as they gear up to host Shotts Bon Accord in the New Coin Holdings West of Scotland Cup on Saturday.

“Maxi” admits his team are on a revenge mission after going down to the Lanarkshire strugglers in a league match which saw his comeback after eight months out with ligament damage, at Meadow Park earlier this month.

The winners will face Auchinleck Talbot or Ardrossan Winton Rovers, who meet in another third round tie on Saturday, in the quarter-finals.

Maxwell said after last Wednesday’s 3-0 defeat against Talbot: “We were disappointed to lose to Talbot and competed well for the first hour before they scored a great free-kick. It was a horrible game against Shotts but we are looking to through. I know if we won we might face Talbot in the quarter-finals but you have to beat the best to win it and our goal is to win a trophy.

Meanwhile striker Michael Hughes played as a trialist with Meadow against Talbot and is likely to feature in the final league match away to Hurlford United tonight (Wednesday).

Manager Stevie Rankin said: “we are operating with a small pool with a few players having moved on but we look forward to the Hurlford game and hope for a positive result. If Michael Hughes does ok he could be involved in the West tie and hopefully we can come through.” Meanwhile Irvine Victoria co-manager Stevie Wilson saluted his team for securing a battling 1-1 draw away to Yoker in the Super First Division.

They now host champions Ardrossan Winton Rovers in the Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup tonight (Wednesday) before taking on Ardeer Thistle away in a league match next Wednesday.

Wilson was encouraged with the weekend result and said: “We played well, especially in the second half and could even have sneaked a win. But it was a good point. Well done to Winton for winning the league but hopefully we can come through the cup tie and win at Ardeer next week.”
