HISTORY was made at the Chick Forbes Trophy race on Sunday when Chick's great grandson, nine year old Mathew Dunn, produced the shock of the day to win the coveted trophy.

The race is held over a two-mile course around the pathways of Irvine moor and it is promoted jointly by Irvine Running Club and Ron's Runners and is now seen as one of the most important events on the local running calendar.

It is held in memory of Chick Forbes who provided inspiration and advice to runners of all abilities during a long association with running in Irvine and Chick's daughter, Roslyn Dunn, along with other family members, annually makes the journey from their home in Dumfries to present the trophy.

This year her grandson, Mathew, enthusiastically requested that he be allowed to participate and handicapper, Andy Rennie, allocated him an estimated time of 22 minutes which he thought would be quite a demanding challenge for a nine-year old.

The event is held as a handicap with the slower runners starting first to be chased down by the faster runners as the race unfolds.

However no-one in the field was fast enough to catch young Mathew who finished in a time of 20.47, four seconds ahead of Rebecca Morrison in second place and nine econds ahead of Melanie Sinclair who was third.

Chick would be very proud that the Forbes DNA has been passed down the generations and his grandson could be on to watch for the future.

The fastest scratch times for Irvine Running Club were: Alex Allardyce 10.49, Billy Richardson 11.10, Dillon Agnew 11.13, Scott Brown 11.23 and for Ron's Runners were:James Chalmers 13.29, Mathew Watson 13.37, Paul McCallum 13.39, Gordon Hodge 13.54.
