THE new sporting craze Walking Football is proving a big hit in Irvine.

KA Leisure’s Football Development Department are working in partnership with Fullarton Youth & Community Project to deliver sessions at the Magnum Leisure Centre, Irvine.

The sessions take place on Thursdays, from 11am until noon and are aimed at the 50+ age group. There will be an initial six-week block up to Christmas to see how popular this initiative is.

Numbers so far have been very encouraging with 10 and 12 attending the first two sessions.

Walking Football has seen a surge in popularity in recent years with teams and projects developing in settings from football clubs, local authorities, community groups, sports clubs and in healthcare settings.

It has the potential to improve people’s lives especially of those aged 50 and upwards.

Benefits include increased physical activity, improved mental health and wellbeing, access to additional sources of support and the opportunity to form new friendships for those living in isolation.
