IRVINE Victoria boss Stevie Wilson has praised his side after they overcame Saltcoats Victoria in testing conditions to extend their lead at the top of the District League.

The Westenders moved 12 points clear at the top of the table following a 2-1 victory at Campbell Park.

Wilson said: "Conditions were difficult and we had to battle hard, but we have been doing that all season. Callum Davidson put us ahead with a great free-kick and it was nice to see Mark McRobert on the scoresheet again after scoring his first competitive goal against Dalry the previous week. "

While heartened with his team's progress Wilson is not getting carried away and said: "We are in a good position and are taking nothing for granted."

With no scheduled game on Saturday Vics have lined up a friendly away to Benburb and the following week they face promotion rivals Girvan the following Saturday.

Wilson added: "The Benburb game will keep us ticking over and we look forward to the Girvan match..Some people think it's a title decider. I wouldn't say so but we look forward to it."

Meanwhile Kilwinning Rangers manager Chris Strain Jnr is urging his players not to let their minds wander to next weekend's home Scottish Junior Cup fifth round clash with Linlithgow Rose as they face Shotts Bon Accord away in the Super First Division on Saturday.

Strain said: "It will be a big game against Linlithgow, I watched the tie against Meadow and there wasn't much between the sides. But we have to concentrate on the league game.. Shotts are one of the best footballing sides I have seen. They drew 2-2 with us at Abbey Park and it will be a test but we are looking to win the match.,"
