FULLARTON Wheelers began a packed week of activities last Monday with event nine of their Winter League programme,

Similar to event eight, based in South Africa, this virtual challenge was a 4.5-mile ascent of Chapman's Peak followed by a four-mile descent to the outskirts of Cape Town.

The usual suspects were battling for top honours with Gordon Graham setting the fastest early time at 21:34.

John Todd continued his impressive form and posted 21:16 to pip Gordon. Next on the timetable was Dave Walker, still looking for his first win of the league and finished 14 seconds ahead of John.

Finally the consistent Darren Kean attacked the course and took his winning run to seven events, completing the course in 20:56.

Darren now has an unassailable lead and cannot be caught in the title race. In the Handicap completion Jim Seenan still leads Peter Beukleman bys six points with young Ryan Broadfoot a further 12 back. It’s all to play for going into the final week.

During the summer months the club take part in the weekly “crit” - the circuit from Gailes to Harry Fairbairn, left past the old Hyster, down to the Magnum Roundabout and back along Marine Drive.

Working in different-paced groups for four or 5five laps it’s a great way to improve group riding skills whilst working hard on the fitness.

Wednesday appeared to be the first night of the new season with four wheelers and five Ayr Roads riders taking part.

Three Fullarton riders took part in the Loudoun Road Club Galston Hilly Time Trial on Saturday with huge congratulations to Sam Malcolmson, Sean Barron and Darren Kean for pushing themselves to their limit.

Half a dozen members decided to cycle up to watch the event and left early in the morning from Loans, taking in the circular circuit of Galston, Sorn, Muirkirk and Darvel.

Sunday was the start of the club’s Summer League programme with the Prologue first up. The route from starting and finishing at Gailes has the riders heading down Marine Drive to the Magnum Roundabout and heading back up the same road they have cycled.

Some 26 riders took on the 3.9-mile route, with six finishing under 10 minutes.

Third was Gordon Graham in 09:33, second was Chris Staples in 09:13 and Darren Kean took top spot in a time of 09:05.
