FULLARTON Wheelers Cycling Club started the week with a return to the Monday evening ‘Nighthawks’ ride.

Nine riders set out from the Gailes Hotel at 7 pm and first headed out to Drybridge before swinging south to pedal through Dundonald and on to Tarbolton. Here they turned back towards the coast, making their way round the back of Prestwick Airport before going back through Loans to their starting point. A total ride of approximately 22 miles.

Wednesday night saw the Club’s Youth Section once again taking over the training facilities at the Barn. A great turnout from the youngsters meant that all six turbo trainers and the Watt Bike were in use all evening. Their sporting endeavours were combined with the usual chatter, fun and enthusiasm that makes a Wheelers Youth Night.

The combination of wind, rain and bitter cold meant that only a handful of the Club members set out on a Saturday run from the Barn. While this hardy band tested themselves in the freezing conditions the most enjoyable part of the morning for one of the riders was the “hot shower at the Barn” on completion of the ride.

Twenty Wheelers were at Irvine cross for the weekend's Sunday Run.

Thankfully the weather had improved after Saturday's washout, still a chill in the air but thankfully there was no rain (or snow!).

This week's route was to take in the Three Lochs Road on the outskirts of Glasgow with a cafe stop at Kilmaurs on the return leg. The group first headed towards Kilwinning before climbing out of the town to Auchentiber, crossing the Lochlibo Road and heading into Stewarton. The steep climb up the Cutstraw Road towards the A77 Glasgow road was next up. Heading North up the A77 the riders soon reached the Three Lochs Road turn where they attacked each other up its steep ramps.

Re-grouping back on the Stewarton road a call was made to the Rendezvous cafe who unfortunately had a large prior booking! With one of the club's favourite stops off the menu the riders called in at the Millhouse restaurant in Stewarton for hot rolls and coffee. The bunch then headed home for Irvine via Cunninghamhead, with some cutting off for Kilmarnock along the way. A ride of between 35 and 40 miles for most.
