ELATED Irvine Victoria manager Stevie Wilson saluted his side as they ended a decade of derby torment in style by racking up their biggest win against Irvine Meadow in two decades.

Vics defeated their bitter foes 4-1 at home to move off bottom spot in the Super First Division. It was their first win against Meadow in more than a decade and biggest margin of victory since they defeated them 4-0 in the 1996 Marymass match.

But Meadow new signing Chris McKight and co-boss Michael Wardrope are still hoping to secure promotion despite the loss.

Wilson said: "That has to be one of my most satisfying results in football and the players deserve so much credit. They have had a lot of stick as it has been such a tough season but I'm not that surprised as we have played better and lost. It will be tough to stay up but we will do our best. Bryan Slavin had a great game, he has so much experience and we night look at offering him a deal."

Meanwhile striker McKnight, who signed from Troon last week said: "Meadow are a big club and I know the coach Neil McGowan from working with him at Troon. I want to help the boys get promoted, I wouldn't have come here if I didn't think the boys were capable of coming up."

Wardrope added: "It was a disappointing result. I felt it was quite an even game but Irvine Vics deserved to win because they took their chances. It will be harder for us to secure promotion but we will keep battling and aim to win our Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup tie against Craigmark on Saturday."
