RUTHERGLEN GLENCAIRN 2

IRVINE VICTORIA 1

DEFEAT was snatched from the jaws of victory as Irvine Vics lost out to a late overtime goal

Vics were clearly still on a high after tasting victory against derby rivals Irvine Meadow in their last game, and they were on the front foot first, going close with George Bonner's header in three minutes which was saved by JC Hutchison.

Glencairn responded a minute later when Tony Fraser's cross picked out the head of Stewart Hall, and Chris Lamb saved well.

Hutchison then tipped Bryan Slavin's header round the post at full stretch in 10 minutes.

There was a flashpoint in 15 minutes when Vics striker David Adams was booked for diving as he went down in the centre of the pitch as Fraser slid in to challenge.

More heroic defending came from Vics in 20 minutes when McKay's header was blocked, and Lamb diverted Hall's rebound attempt over the crossbar.

Lamb then tipped Fraser's cross off the head of Hall, colliding with the post at the same time.

Having absorbed all the pressure so far, Vics stunned everyone by taking the lead against the run of play on the half hour. A nice passing move ended with a speculative shot from distance by Kevin Adam, which deceived Hutchison as it skipped off the surface past him into the corner of the net.

Just after the break, McKay's low shot saw Lamb dive full length to beat it away.

Hutchison then slightly fumbled a shot from Adams before grabbing the ball again. Then Team's curling shot seemed to be beating Lamb before Bonner got his leg in the way to clear.

Vics took Ryan Singleton off as he was almost certainly being sent off for his next foul, Grant Bolton replacing him.

The visitors went down to 10 men moments later. Adams was given a second booking for comments made to the assistant referee, and suddenly the task of holding out was made even more difficult.

Glens equalised in 86 minutes when Fraser's inswinging corner from the right was met by the head of Del McNab in a crowd of players, and he glanced the ball home.

Johnston's curling shot in 91 minutes seemed to be heading for the top corner until Lamb reached up to save above his head, and then in stoppage time the referee made it very clear that he had stopped his watch as lengthy treatment was required for an injury to Lamb.

Four minutes into injury-time the hosts were awarded a penalty kick after a cross from the right struck the outstretched arm of a defender inside the penalty area. Jay McKay stepped sent Lamb the wrong way and complete a shock win.
