IRVINE 123 all out
WEIRS 124-5
INJURY-ravaged Irvine ended what has been a testing week by losing out to the Glasgow visitors, despite putting up strong resistance.
They had suffered a double injury blow on Wednesday night when 2nd XI skipper Richie Wilson and Depak Yadav were both whipped off to hospital following a collision on the boundary nine overs into the McCulloch Cup match at home to Ayr. The game was abandoned.
Stand-in skipper Stuart McCallum said: "They were both going for a catch and Richie suffered ripped tendons on his knee and will be out for the season, which is a real blow and Deepak fractured his nose and will be out for three to four weeks. So we were short on numbers for the Weirs game."
Back to Saturday's action and Irvine started well, with McCallum and Graham Owens putting on a partnership of 40 and McCallum teaming up with South African amateur Jonathan Waspe to put on 50.
The hosts were at one point struggling on 27 for 3 but picked up and reached 114 for 4 before losing their last six wickets for only nine runs.
South African amateur Brandon Harwood took 2 for 21 in a fine spell, but Weirs ended their innings on 124 for 5, giving them a five-wicket victory.
Added McCallum: "We were going well at 114 for 4 but had a total collapse, although Weirs are a top side and I fancy them for the league."
