FULLARTON Wheelers were in racing action again last week at the second Kames Crit races in Muirkirk.

The club had five young riders at the event participating in three different age categories: Karsyn Baird was in the under 12s boys race and, despite being one of the youngest in the field, showed great determination and spirit to keep racing to the end. Conal Davidson and Isla Muirhead were in the boys and girls U14s races.

Despite having gained good track experience over the winter they are novices to crit racing, with this being Conal’s debut. Both youngsters rode strongly and are developing their race craft. In the U16 girls race Club stalwarts Zoe Watters and Martha Hillard, once again, were the FWCC representatives.

In a very tactical race with excellent conditions, both girls rode hard and fast, achieving personal best lap times. In the end, Zoe finished third and Martha fifth. Zoe’s third place means that one of the girls has been on the podium at every West of Scotland Youth Crit so far this year.

On Sunday the Club was honoured to, once again, host the Bill Moore Memorial 10-mile Time Trial.

A field of over more than 100 riders tackled rain and a tough headwind for the outbound leg from Eglinton down to the Papermill roundabout.

Despite these conditions, Derek Skinner achieved a fantastic personal best of 22min 45sec, with Darren Kean being the first Fullarton rider home in 21:11, giving him seventh place overall.

The club’s fastest women riders again achieved very close times with Aileen Clyde on 24:03 in second in front of Catherine Logan on 24: 04.

Other Fullarton Wheelers riders were as follows: Gordon Graham 22: 26, Allan Duncan 23:06, Chris Blakely 23:39, Stevie Watters 23:48, Scott McKendrick 24:16, Martin Shields 24: 56, Natalie Hunter 25:59, Alan McCall 26: 08, Sam Malcolmson 27:03 and Mark Provan 29:24.

The race was won by Chris Smart of GTR in a fantastic time of 19:45, beating the next rider home, Kenneth Armstrong of Carrick Cycling Club by 44 seconds.

The first woman rider was Toni McIntosh of Ayr Roads CC in 23:20.
