SCOTTISH Junior Cup-winning legend Sandy Hume rolled back the years when he turned out in a Meadow jersey again last Friday night.

Some 44 years after helping the club win its third Scottish Junior Cup in 1973, Sandy (64) played for the Former Players’ Select team in the annual Legends Game against the Medda Supporters XI at Meadow Park and still looked the part.

The Former Players’ team went ahead when ex co-manager Gareth Turner ran onto a cute, lofted pass from Darwin Johnstone and walked the ball into the net.

The ever-classy Garry Fleming stretched the lead with a beautiful curling shot which went in off the underside of the crossbar and Paul Maxwell completed the first half scoring to make it 3-0.

An unexpected feature of the first half was a substitution which saw young Charlie Watt coming on to play for the Select XI, while his dad, George, another former Meadow coach, was playing at right back.

The second half continued at an understandably slower pace with Gareth Turner and Garry Fleming netting again to complete the scoring, making the final score 5-0.

Among the other all-time favourites who lined up were former captain Alan McTurk, popular striker Paul Maxwell, Kevin Robison and ex-coach and player, Neil McGowan.

After the game George said on Facebook " It was a pleasure to take part in and pleased that I played in the same Irvine Meadow team as my son."

A young lad, John McWilliam agreed to help by playing in goals

Former Players’ XI included: George Watt, Scott McKie, Charlie Watt, Darwin Johnstone, Neil McGowan, Ben Carson, Garry Fleming, Gareth Turner, Paul Maxwell, John McWilliam (gk), Alan McTurk, Kevin Robison. Subs were: Charlie Watt and Sandy Hume.
