RESILIENT Irvine bounced back from a league defeat on Saturday by progressing to the quarter-finals of a national competition on Sunday.

Saturday saw them take on Glasgow side GHKA in an away Western First Division match.

The visitors batted first and overseas amateur Jonathan Waspe was adjudged to be out for just three after being caught from behind, although he did not appear to touch the ball/

Fellow opener Jon Conway then went cheaply for four.

Stand-in skipper Stuart McCallum and fellow veteran Graham Owens gave them a bit of hope by hitting 16 and 14 respectively. However they were all out for 118.

The hosts finished on 119-3, giving them a 7-wicket victory. Overseas amateur Brandon Harwood took two wickets and McCallum one.

Sunday saw Bon Accord head to Marress for a Scottish Trophy match.

The visitors were bowled all out for 155, Waspe taking 3-41, Singh 2-15 and Hafeez Muthair 2-28.

Irvine replied with 156 for 2, giving them an eight-wicket victory. Indy Singh top scored with 32 and Owens retired hurt on 32. They now host Aberdeen Grammar or Edinburgh Accies in the quarter-finals in late June.

McCallum said: "We have been runner-up five times in this event so it would be good if we could win it."

Irvine also ran Premier Division Greenock close in the Rowan Cup on Thursday. The hosts were 176-5 from their 50 overs, with Waspe taking 2-18 and Irvine hit 157-6, Harwood top-scoring with 66. This gave the hosts a narrow 19-run win.

They also lost by eight wickets to Prestwick in the McCulloch Cup on Wednesday.
