FULLARTON Wheelers rider Steve Donaldson was part of the Great Britain Cycling Team which participated in the World Transplant Games in Malaga, Spain last week.

Steve took part in three events - a five- kilometre individual time trial, followed by a 20 kilometre team time trial and finally a 30 kilometre road race, over just two days in sweltering heat with temperature hitting over 40 degrees.

In the 5K time trial Steve achieved a time of 8min 3secs, placing him 11th out of 32 in his age group and 52nd out of 130 overall.

In the team time trial Steve, as part of the three man GB Team, got a time of 28’ 01” placing them 10th of 20 teams, and managing to catch and lap Team USA during the event. In the final event, the 30K road race, Steve put in a fantastic effort, to come 13th overall.

Steve is an inspiration to all at Fullarton Wheelers and the club are particularly delighted to have one of their members competing at international level.

Meanwhile, 23 riders turned out for this week's Fullarton Sunday Run.

Dry but with a strong South Westerly breeze it was decided to head South and have the advantage of a tailwind for the return leg.

Leaving Irvine via Gailes, the bunch passed through Loans, Prestwick, Ayr and Alloway. From here the group tackled the steep, sharp ramps of the Maybole high road. The riders regrouped at the Culzean turnoff, where one of the team snapped his chain.

Unfortunately the three others who stopped to assist did not have a chain breaker. The rest continued towards the Pennyglen and onto the coast road back to Ayr. Now with a tailwind they were quickly back in Doonfoot. Here was the cafe stop for the day at the Balgarth Pines. Thankfully for the stricken wheeler a well prepared rider was tracked down, with two riders returning to repair the chain and got him on his way. After the coffee stop the team retraced their steps home. It was a good social run of around 50 miles for most.
