TWO talented Irvine boxers are celebrating national medal glory following excellent performances at the weekend.
Jake McHendrie and James Affleck (both aged 14) headed to Ravenscraig Sports Centre in Greenock to compete in the Scottish Novice Boxing Championships.
They were up against some of the top competitors from across the country in a keenly contested event.
Both are members of Irvine Elite Boxing Club.
Irvine Royal Academy pupil Jake won a gold medal on a split decision in the 48kg category (year 02).
He defeated a challenger from Auchengeigh in the final.
James Affleck, who attends Greenwood Academy, boxed well and took home a silver medal. He lost out in the final of the 62kg (year 04/03) to an opponent from North Glasgow Boxing Club in what was a closely contested final, which went right to the wire.
Coach Joe Affleck, uncle of James, was proud of the two young boxers and said: "I am delighted for Jake and James as they both fought well and it's a great achievement to win medals at a national event. They worked hard for their success. On another day the fight could have gone James's way. They work hard in training and deserve their success."
