A HIGHLY-rated trialist who produced a stunning display for Irvine Vics in their Championship debut is being targeted as a possible signing by boss Brian McLuckie.

The utility player, whose identity is being kept under wraps, netted four times in the 6-1 demolition of Larkhall Thistle at Gasworks Park.

However, despite his team making a hugely impressive start, McLuckie will not get carried away as he realises much work has still to be done.

He said: "The trialist did really well, and we are interested in him, But we're not letting on who he is as we don't want to alert other clubs. Another trialist also had a good game. We played well and Ryan Singleton scored a couple of goals.

"But we can't read too much into it as I think Larkhall will be near the bottom of the table. I'm sure there will be trickier tests before the end of the season."

Vics have two important league games inside four days, hosting Kello Rovers tomorrow (Wednesday) and Dalry Thistle on Saturday.

McLuckie added: "They won't be easy as Kello are a good side and Dalry have kept most of their players from the league success last year. But we will prepare well for them."

Meanwhile Irvine Meadow counterpart Brian McGinty is looking for improvements as his team face Hurlford United away tomorrow and on Saturday host Kirkintilloch Rob Roy.

They lost 3-0 at home to Clydebank and the manager said: "The first goal was a really poor one to lose although we had chances after that. It was a disappointing result and we made mistakes. But I'm sure we can learn from them."

Kilwinning Rangers began their top flight campaign in style with a 1-0 win away to Petershill on Saturday, with Bryan Boylan on target.

Manager Chris Strain was impressed with the overall display and feels it bodes well for the rest of the season.

He said: "We moved the ball about really well and it was a good performance, we also created quite a few chances in each half and that was encouraging."

Buffs tomorrow host Renfrew and on Saturday head to Barrfields Park to face a Largs Thistle side, who like Meadow were promoted last season.

Strain, whose team came close to winning the Premier Division last season added: "We have a good squad and want to win every single game we play."
