CUMBERNAULD UNITED 1

KILWINNING RANGERS 1 (Buffs won 4-3 on penalties)

INSPIRED goalkeeper Adam Strain saved two penalties and made a string of saves to help Buffs edge into the quarter-finals.

Buffs got off to the perfect start with a vintage solo goal in 16 minutes. Isaac Kerr surged from his own half before racing into the box and slamming the ball home.

Ricky Hanvey, Tommy Maitland and Ian Cashmore then all missed chances for the Abbey Park side.

However the hosts came back into the game after the break with Strain making some important saves. But they levelled seven minutes from time.

Buffs then introduced new signing Mark Barrownan.

However late on, they were reduced to1 0 men when Martyn Campbell was harshly sent off, despite appearing to win a header.

The game headed into a penalty shootout. Strain saved two Cumbernauld efforts and Kerr, Tommy Maitland and Ben Lewis netted before Liam McGuinness converted the decisive spot-kick to spark celebrations among the noisy visiting fans.

KILWINNING RANGERS: Strain; Fleeting, Kerr, Campbell, Coleman McGuinness, Maitland, Hanvey, Agnew, Cashmore, Stewart. Subs: Lewis, Barrowman, Boylan, Cumming, Burns.

James Scott NAC Trophy Quarter-Final

DIRRANS ATHLETIC 2

WINLINTON WOLVES 1

DETERMINED Dirrans advanced to the semi=finals with a hard-fought victory.

The hosts started well but Wolves came into the game and were causing problems to the Dirrans defence.

Dirrans were forced to make a early change when Ryan Miller had to come off after not 15 minutes to replaced by John Pirie. Wolves probably edged the first half although home player Chris Bennett had the best chance, hitting the bar with a strong effort.

After the break, Dirrans upped the pace and started to play higher up the pitch.

Brian Strain then hammered home a 25-yard free-kick to put Dirrans 1-0 ahead.

This was the home side's best spell in the game.

Wolves then broke down left a shot was saved by Stewart and rebound fell to a visiting striker who poked it towards goal. Peter Woods slid in and cleared the ball off the line, but the referee thought it had crossed the line and gave a goal.

The controversy did not end there, however. Dirrans broke down the right and the ball didn't look over the shy line. The linesman has his but flag up the referee didn't see it and played on. The ball was played into the box and Pirie stroked it home. Dirrans went wild, thinking they had scored, but the referee spoke to the linesman and chalked it off. Home coach Alan Kerr was then sent off.

The game was open now, with both teams going for it. And in the final minute Dirrans got their reward with another great goal. A great move down the left ended with Alan Frew putting in a great ball for Pirie to again put it away. This time the goal stood and it was too late for a comeback.
