DETERMINED Kilwinning Rangers co-boss Colin Stewart is urging his team to “finish the job” and secure the District League title as they gear up for their biggest game of the season.

Leaders Buffs set themselves up for Saturday’s hotly anticipated promotion showdown with second-placed Ardrossan Winton Rovers at Abbey Park by hammering Darvel 7-1.

And defender Barry Fleeting is hoping to exact revenge on Rovers, who are the only team to have beaten them in the league this season, winning 2-1 at Winton Park in November.

The game will also see Stewart’s fellow co-boss Chris Strain Jnr do dad battle with dad Chris Snr, the Winton manager.

Stewart was impressed with his team’s battling qualities and said: “I was delighted with our performance against Darvel, it was a great team effort. We recovered quickly after conceding a goal and never looked back after that. Darvel are one of the better sides in the league and we dominated the match.” While insisting he is taking it a game at a time, Stewart now sees the bigger picture and knows his team’s fate is in their own hands.

He said: “If win three more games we win the league and that is our target, we want to finish the job as our aim is to play at the highest level. But first and foremost we have to make sure we achieve promotion and will do that with two more victories.

“Winton beat us earlier in the season but we had Chris McGowan sent off and had a few players missing. We are looking to make amends for that and win the match.

“Ourselves and Winton are without doubt the two best teams in the league and it’s great that we get to host the biggest game of the season, It’s our home game and we want to take three points. Some people say it’s all about Strain v Strain in the dugouts but we are just focusing on the match.” Fleeting, who won the title in his previous spell with Buffs two seasons ago, was encouraged with the weekend performance and said: “We worked hard and deserved the win. But we are still taking it a game at a time just as we have much of the season as we don’t know the fixtures far in advance. They beat us earlier in the season and it’s not so much that we want revenge it’s just another three points we are looking for.

“We have been unbeaten at home all season and want to preserve that by winning on Saturday. Promotion is our target.” Meanwhile IRVINE VICTORIA co-manager Stevie Wilson says securing survival in the Super First Division would mean just as much as title success.

He can take a lot of positives from his team’s display, despite suffering a 2-1 defeat away to Cumbernauld United and said: “We can have no complaints about the performance as we played well and dominated possession and at the very least I feel we deserved a draw from the match. But the second goal came about from a setpiece after we needlessly gave away a free-kick and we have to defend them better.

“In this league setpieces can often settle games and we have taken advantage of them to win a couple of games. If we could stay in this league it would mean as much as winning the league was we worked so hard to get into it.

Vics on Saturday host Greenock and Wilson is looking for an improvement in home form.

He said: “We should have taken more from our home games and have done well away so we will be looking to take three points.” For the full story see this week's Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald.
