SHETTLESTON 1

IRVINE MEADOW 1

A LAST gasp own goal denied Meadow the three points they deserved at Greenfield Park.

Meadow, who had defeated Ardeer Thistle in a friendly last Tuesday. were looking to return to winning ways following a defeat and a draw in their last two competitive games.

They started strongly and had the only real chance of the opening period in 22 minutes when a Ben Black effort was tipped round the post by the home goalie.

Meadow looked sharp after the break and had two good chances. Firstly Graham Boyd headed a Liam Madden cross off the face of the bar and a home defender made a goal-line clearance in 70 minutes. Then two minutes later a Ryan Begley volley was tipped round the post by the home goalie.

Nine minutes from time Madden sent a superb pass to Boyd, who was upended inside the box. The striker then dusted himself down to net from the penalty spot and put the visitors ahead.

It looked like Meadow were going to claim all three points. However they were hit with a sucker punch two minutes into injury-time. A corner-kick was turned into his own net by visiting player Mark McLennan.

Later Meadow co-boss Gareth Turner said: "I am absolutely gutted for our boys, it was a great performance at a tough venue. The attitude and effort was superb, we were very unlucky."
