Ardagh Glass League Cup

KILWINNING RANGERS 3

DALRY THISTLE 0

STRIKER Carlo Monti notched a glorious double as Buffs swept aside lower league Dalry to rack up a second league cup win.

It has to be said that this was a poor game as a spectacle.

The best of the opening action came in four minutes when Blair Lochhead had to turn a 35-yard effort from Monti over for a corner. At the other end, Reid Brown took advantage of a defensive slip to steal the ball, but couldn't get a cross in.

Kilwinning pressed again and a cross saw a David Winters header turned over the bar by Lochhead. Liam McGuinness then shot wide.

With 21 minutes gone a Monti effort from 25 yards went past the post.

It then took an outstanding reaction save from Lochhead to deny former Ayr United man Winters.

The opening goal arrived in 33 minutes. A 50-50 challenge 35 yards out saw the ball break kindly to Monti who ran on to score.

In 35 minutes, a throw-in back to Lochhead was chased down by Winters who blocked the clearance which fell kindly for him, leaving a tap-in.

Dalry were forced into a change in 38 minutes when a knee injury ended the game for returning defender Barry Fleeting with Craig Marshall taking his place.

Thistle threatened before the break and a header from former Buffs man Ian Cashmore crashed back off the bar.

Into the second half and visiting boss Gavin Friels tried to make changes to freshen things up.

A poor clearance by the keeper in 55 minutes saw Jordan Stuart try his luck from 45 yards, but the attempt went wide.

Kilwinning then won a series of four corners in quick succession, but the Dalry defence coped well with the pressure.

Dalry were much more in the game and a good move down the right ended with a Cashmore shot deflected wide. Dalry were passing well and had Kilwinning pegged back for a while, however they couldn't find a way to goal.

The decisive third goal came in 80 minutes. Despite looking offside, Monti got behind the defence and as play went on he slotted home.
