Scottish Junior Cup First Round

IRVINE MEADOW 0

MARYHILL 0 (Meadow won 3-2 on penalties)

HEROIC young goalkeeper Craig Gordon made two superb penalty shoot saves as the home side edged out Maryhill in a one-sided replay.

Medda dominated for long spells but missed a host of chances and had the youngster to thank for stepping up in the spot kick drama to pull off two cracking saves to send them into the second round draw.

The home side opened on the front foot and Eddie McTernan had their first chance when he shot just over before his header was well held by 'Hill keeper Derrick Moore.

Ross McKinnon kept the pressure on the visitors with a crisp long range free-kick.

Maryhill began to threaten and Colin Preston teed up Ryan Tiffney but as he about to pull the trigger was denied by a superb last ditch tackle by Darren Miller.

Medda were back on the offensive and Ben Black waltzed past a couple of defenders but shot just wide.

The hosts almost took the lead just before the break when McTernan beat keeper Moore to a Ross McKinnon cross but watched in agony as his header looped onto the top of the net.

Meadow were camped in the 'Hill half right from the start of the second half but couldn't get the goal their pressure deserved.

New signing James Marks, making his first start since joining from Hurlford United, volleyed wide then Ben Black watched at his shot came crashing back off the post.

McTernan picked up a pass, but his control let him down and the chance was lost.

McTernan and sub Danny McKay were next to test keeper Moore but their failure in front of goal nearly proved costly when Maryhill substitute Nickolas Emsley raced clear but young Medda keeper Craig Gordon pulled off a fine stop at full stretch.

Medda had one last chance when Rhys Devlin was left unmarked a couple of yards out but snatched at this shot and the game was heading for a penalty shoot out.

Carson, McKay and Mark McLennan were on target as they progressed.

Manager Ross Wilson said afterwards: "I cannot ask any more of the boys because we are creating loads of chances.

Over the course of the two games I thought we deserved to go through. I'm just disappointed that we couldn't win it in normal time but it doesn't matter how you get through. I don't think we've played badly since the Petershill game but we're not carrying much luck."
