NINE decades of history at Abbey Park could come to an end with Kilwinning Rangers considering a move away from the longstanding ground.

After Junior clubs voted by a decisive majority to join the Pyramid System, Kilwinning Rangers met on Monday night and confirmed they would weigh up the possibility of either refurbishing Abbey Park at a cost of more than £100,000 or re-locate to Kilwinning Sports Club.

Buffs, who voted in favour of joining the Pyramid System, have been at Abbey Park since 1929 and the ground is held with great affection  by many fans.

The club won the Scottish Junior Cup in 1999 and five years later took the Super League Premier Division title.

Abbey Park chairman Colin Boyd told the Times: "We would have to spend about £100,000 on doing Abbey Park if we were to stay here as new changing rooms, a kitchen and toilets would be needed and that might be insurmountable.

"If we stayed and left the ground as it was we would only be able to be involved in a lower level of football.

"One option we discussed is to move to Kilwinning Sports Club within two years. There's support for that move and while work would have to be carried out we would have a head start with the existing changing rooms and car parking facilities there."

But he added: "As far as the future of the club goes the fans should have the opportunity to decide what happens. We are the custodians and I won't be here forever. It's still early days but we are taking everything into consideration."
