AFTER enjoying a taste of life in the national fold irvine gymnast David Weir admits he is determined to get back to the high life sooner rather than later.

The 15-year-old claimed parallel bars bronze in the youth category at the British Championships this time last year before winning team silver at the School Games in September with Scotland.

Despite Weir’s successes he finds himself out of the British national team after taking time to adjust following a move from Largs Gymnastics Club to City of Glasgow.

But, with the Greenwood Academy pupil now well and truly settled, Weir is setting his sights on returning to the national set up as soon as possible.

“My highlight so far was getting into the British national team,” he said.

“It was two years ago and, while I was only in for two years, it was a great experience.

“I am not in it at the moment because I swapped clubs and I have been adapting to the environment but I am aiming to make it in next year.

“I would like to get back in but I would also like to go to the Commonwealth Games in 2018 – I am too young for this year and Glasgow unfortunately.

“My big goal for the year is to try and beat my personal best in the all-around and try and get some medals at British and Scottish level – that should get me back into the national team.” Despite not being in the British national set-up, Weir has caught the attention of some and has been selected on the SSE Next Generation ambassador programme.

Through the scheme Weir receives help and support to help achieve his dreams – something he believes will prove crucial as he aims to do exactly that.

“I am quite proud that I was picked to go on a scheme like the SSE Next Generation ambassadors because I am have put in lots of hard work and it shows that it has been noticed,” he added.

“It is nice to know that people do believe in you rather than just your mum and your coach and that they are people out there looking after you.” SSE are partnering with SportsAid to support the sporting stars of the future as part of their commitment to Glasgow 2014 and beyond with their SSE Next Generation ambassador programme.
