FOUR NAAC runners were competing in the Nigel Barge 10k Race on Saturday which took place place in and around the Garscube sports complex, Maryhill, Glasgow.

The race commemorates Nigel Barge who was killed in action during World War II and who was a keen athlete with Maryhill Harriers.

The race has run every year since 1943.

Conditions were good with a slight wind as runners lined up for the two lap course which begins within the grounds of the Sports Complex.

Mark Preston and Gareth Brown exchanged positions within the leading pack throughout the first lap of the race with Shona Blades and Fiona Comrie battling hard as they made there way out round the first lap of the course.

On re-entering the complex runners had began to settle into their rhythm and began to negotiate the slight accents and descents within the the course for the second lap.

Gareth Brown was first NAAC runner home in 24th position and a PB time of 39.25 mins, not far behind was Mark Preston in 25th position in 39.44 mins. Shona Blades was next in (however time and position not recorded) with Fiona Comrie not far behind in a credible 62nd position and a time of 45.57 mins.

The race was won by Russell White of Stirling University in 32.36 mins.

A well-organised event by Maryhill Harriers and an enjoyable morning for everyone involved.

Congratulations go to North Ayrshire Athletics Club member Laura McGregor who came first in the Female points table which is recorded by Eglinton Parkrun.

Points are awarded by number of runs completed and number of times a runner has volunteered.

Laura has devoted many Saturday mornings in order to assist with both marshaling and timekeeping as well as completing 31 runs since the event was established in March 2013.

Without volunteers this event would not take place so many thanks to all who participate in making sure this event goes ahead.
