IRVINE Running Club ace David Millar made a fantastic return to form at the Tom Scott Memorial 10-mile road race last week.

Many club runners regard the ‘Tom Scott’ as the traditional start to the Summer road racing season and this year’s event had been designated as both the Scottish and West District 10-mile championships.

The race is usually held on the pathways surrounding Strathclyde Park but, due to preparation work for the triathlon at this year’s Commonwealth Games, the 2014 race was held on roads in and around Carluke. This produced a hillier than usual course and combined with a stiff breeze on the day fast times were going to be difficult to achieve.

This made Millar’s time of 54m46s for the accurately measured course to take seventh place overall in a top class field all the more remarkable. He also took gold medals in both the Scottish and West District M40 categories and received the Scottish Veteran Harriers Trophy.

Meanwhile closer to home six Irvine running Club members have improved their PB’s at the Eglinton Park run 5k over the past two weeks.

Well done to Craig Picket (20.20; Iain McBurnie (20.57); Michael Brown (23.03); Ben Thomson (24.16); Lorraine Dobbs (32.32) and Yvonne Gallagher (34.53). The local parkrun continues to attract a weekly turnout of 100 runners and is free to all who want to give it a try after you register at www.parkrun.org.uk.

The Tuesday evening training sessions organised by Irvine Running Club from Irvine Sports Club continue to offer a progression route for running improvement for all abilities. For further information see www.irvinerunningclub.co.uk..
