A COCKTAIL of folk, gospel, Americana and soul will be served up at this month’s String Jam Club in Selkirk.

And that delicious cocktail is called Chastity Brown.

According to Accoustic Magazine the Minneapolis singer-songwriter 'weaves a spell that evokes the spirit of Roberta Flack and Woody Guthrie’.

Anyone who caught her recent appearance on Later...with Jools Holland with the new single Colorado has to agree.

Allie Fox from the String Jam Club told us: “I was able to book Chastity on the back of her Celtic Connections show and I am thrilled that she’ll be our headliner. Chastity seamlessly blends folk, Americana, gospel and soul into her music and has a voice that will penetrate a brick wall with its pure emotion.

“This will be an extraordinary concert, thrilling stuff.” Chastity grew up playing the saxophone and drums in church before she started to write and sing her own songs.

Now, with four acclaimed albums under her belt and a fifth one on the way, Chastity’s work has generated a storm of attention and rave reviews.

Sounding like a young Mavis Staples, she writes songs that are carried deep in the American psyche - the hunger, desperation and confidence that runs through our times.

She’s been hailed by NPR, CMT, American Songwriter, The Times, and Paste Magazine as a songwriter to watch.

Chastity’s tour, which includes the String Jam Club, is built round her headline show at Celtic Connections this year, and she will be joined on stage by her equally superb keyboardist deVon Gray.

Allie addded: “This is a gig definitely not to miss and we anticipate a sell-out, so buy your tickets soon to avoid disappointment.

“This will be a restless, electrifying and enveloping performance by Chastity, a night of soul-searching grit and grace.” Tickets for the Friday, January 16 String Jam Club gig at the County Hotel in Selkirk are available by calling 01750-721233.

Doors open at 7.30pm.
