IRVINE'S Scottish Maritime Museum has officially opened its doors to the public following a 1.25m refurbishment.

The vast Victorian Linthouse building of 1872 has undergone the impressive restoration and was re-opened by Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop on Friday.

The new-look building houses a collection Scottish-built ships, vessels and engineering designs which influenced the course of maritime history across the world.

The recent refurbishment centred on the restoration of the spectacular glass roof of the building which was formerly the Linthouse Engine Shop of the Alexander Stephen and Sons shipyard in Govan before being relocated to Irvine in 1990.

During the revamp, 2,100 individual panes of glass were replaced.

The refurbishment, which extends over 40,000 square feet, also included an 85,000 project to completely renew the interpretation exhibits.
