DREGHORN could be set for a business boost after plans to construct a brewery in the village were revealed.

The Arran Brewery have acquired a five-acre site at the old Dreghorn Primary School where they hope to build a Sake brewery which would be the first of its kind in Scotland.

Formal planning applications are set to be made within the next three months where it is hoped the site will host a state of the art brewing and distilling research and teaching centre.

Sake is made with fermented rice and, much like sushi, is an intregal part of Japanese cuisine.

As the Brewery look to expand their business to the Orient, the company has identified Dreghorn as the ideal location for their ambitious plans.

It is hoped that the brewery will be in production by winter as that is the traditional time to make Sake in Japan.

Arran Brewery Managing Director, Gerald Michaluk, explained the link between Dreghorn and Japan and has high hopes for the brewery.

He said: “It may not first appear as though there is a connection between Dreghorn and Japan but there is. In Japan you will find a small piece of Scotland in the form of a church which once graced Dreghorn but which was dismantled and rebuilt in Tokyo.

“As well as the Sake brewery, which will almost exclusively export its Sake to Japan, there will be our research and development centre and a brewing and distilling training school subject to licensing.

“We have been making on a very small, almost domestic scale and are now ready to build a sizable facility.” The Arran Brewery are currently raising funds for the project and have launched a “crowd funding” initiative which draws to a close at 11am on Friday, April 4.
