MINDLESS thugs who smashed up a Kilwinning school’s greenhouse have been blasted by its head teacher.

Devastated Susan Patrick, head teacher at Abbey Primary School, has voiced her dismay after discovering the school’s £4,000 greenhouse had been vandalised.

The vandals battered 18 holes through the greenhouse, as well as ripping the door off and scoring the side of the poly tunnel.

The heartless act had occurred over the weekend after Susan, school pupils and staff made the upsetting discovery.

The greenhouse was used by pupils to grow their own vegetables to sell them in a market garden.

Abbey Primary had saved money in order to fund the project in order to make use of the school’s extensive grounds and provide something extra for the kids to take part in.

Police are now hunting for the vandals and will be using the school’s CCTV to help snare the criminals.

Speaking to the Times, Susan revealed the extent of the damage caused which she described as “soul destroying”.

She said: “The damage to the poly tunnel is so bad, I was shocked out of my wits that people would do that but maybe that’s me being naive.

“It cost us £4,000 and we’ve worked so hard to get the grounds at the school developed and put it to good use.

“We’ve saved up a lot of money so the kids can grow their own veg, have a market garden, sell the veg and get them involved.

“We also managed to get a janitor in to help us with it and he’s been fantastic.

“But then we discovered when we came in on Monday that 18 holes had been punched through it, the door has been ripped and the body of it is now scored and split with huge holes.

“We’ve worked so hard to have something like this and now its just been wasted. It’s soul destroying. We don’t have the money to keep re-paying these things but we’re sticking film tape round it to try and seal it.

“But we shouldn’t have to be doing these things in the first place!

“I’m sure the parents will be shocked too because they know all about the things we’ve been trying to do and most importantly improve things for the kids.” A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We are appealing for witnesses after two youths were observed to enter the grounds of Abbey Primary School on September 22. The youths were observed damaging property within the school. Police are carrying out enquiries and are appealing for witnesses.

“Anyone with any information should call Police Scotland on 101.”
