FLOODING engulfed much of Ayrshire on Monday - but Irvine and Kilwinning escaped mostly unscathed.

After the banks of the River Irvine at the A735 near Kilmarnock, 33 people had to be resuced from the nearby Asda.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) issued a flood warning for the Low Green/Waterside area of Irvine.

The Low Green is often a hotspot for mass flooding and Monday was no different as water engulfed the area.

As you can see from this dramatic picture, the grass area and football pitch at Greenbank is almost entirely covered by water.

Dozens of pictures on Facebook and Twitter have also shown the River Irvine practically touching the bridge that separates Waterside and the Low Green.

The water from the river appeared to spread as far to nearby houses at Milgarholm Avenue but as the Times went to press there have been no reports of substantial damage by flooding.

However, there were road closures on the day which included Dreghorn’s Station Brae which suffered from flooding problems. Last year saw some of the worst flooding in recent times, particularly in Kiwinning’s Corsehill and Bridgend.

However, in response the council have since carried out minor flooding works in the areas in a bid to curb any future problems.
