The Scottish Open trophy tour has made its last stop at Glebe Primary.

Schoolchildren across North Ayrshire got their hands on two trophies that will be sought by the world’s top golfers this July.

The Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open and Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open take place at Dundonald Links on July 13–16 and July 27-30 respectively - the first time both events have been held at the same venue.

Ahead of what will be a fantastic summer of golf, and with under-16s able to attend both tournaments free of charge, the Scottish Open trophies embarked on a three-week tour of local schools to try to inspire North Ayrshire’s young people.

In a packed schedule, the two trophies - which are traditional Scottish quaichs, a historic symbol of welcome and hospitality - visited an incredible 60 schools since the tour began in Arran on June 6.

The final stop was at Glebe Primary on Monday morning. Robert Gordon, Commercial Director for the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at the European Tour, was there every step of the way, giving a presentation on the events and their history at each school.

He said: “The children were so excited to see the trophies today, and across the tour. The best players in the world will be in their local area in just a few weeks, and they have the opportunity to see them up close and for free.

“This is a great chance to encourage interest in golf amongst young people. In the years to come, maybe North Ayrshire will have its own Rory McIlroy or Lydia Ko.”

North Ayrshire Council Chief Executive Elma Murray added: “These two high-profile events provide us with an amazing opportunity and we are working hard to create a legacy in North Ayrshire.

“With world class golfers signed up to play at Dundonald Links in July, many of our young people have already been inspired to give this great game a go.”
