A GROUP of travellers were served with eviction papers by the council after making a stop off at the Magnum site.

The Travellers have now left the area after turning up at the site of the former leisure centre last week.

Within an hour of travellers arriving last week it was reported to NAC.

Council officers visited the site to serve a ‘council notice’ requesting they leave by 9am Wednesday, February 7, however officers visited the site again to find the travellers still onsite.

North Ayrshire Council then obtained a court notice ordering them to move within 24 hours, which was served Wednesday afternoon.

A court date was set for Friday at 2pm to obtain an ‘eviction notice’ which gives instructions to have the vehicles moved off the land.

An NAC spokesperson said: “The travellers left the site on Monday evening after an eviction notice was granted following a hearing at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court.”

The council’s own policy, in line with Scottish Government guidelines, considers travellers to be a minority ethnic community, recognises travellers right to a nomadic life and respects they may wish to maintain a travelling way of life as part of their cultural identity.
