A Kilwinning shop has come up with a cracking plan to prevent anti-social egging during Hallowe’en.

Premier KK Convenience Store in the town’s Main Street has BANNED the sale of eggs to anyone under 18 in a bid to ‘crack’ down on the messy antics.

The store’s owner Sandeep Dhaliwal says last year’s Hallowe’en festivities resulted in the Main Street “smelling like eggs for two days”.

He said: “Last year was really bad and we had a lot of people from other businesses and residents from nearby who came in to complain. Their properties, businesses and windows had all been hit by eggs. The whole town centre was covered in egg and it smelled bad for two days.

“Everyone wants to have fun but that was spoiling it for everyone. So we made a decision that we would not sell eggs to anyone under the age of 18 over the Hallowe’en period. We have had no complaints about the policy so far. In fact, the local community has been hugely supportive and I believe a few other shops have decided to do the same thing.”

Sandeep made the announcement on the store’s Facebook page, telling customers: “Eggs have many uses. Throwing them isn’t one of them.

“We realise that whilst Hallowe’en is a great time for most people, for some it can be spoilt as a result of anti-social behaviour.

“To assist in reducing anti-social behaviour during this period, we will not be selling eggs to any persons under the age of 18 during the Halloween period.”

The shop’s egg ban was welcomed by police and council chiefs.

Chief Inspector Brian Shaw said: “There will be additional patrols and police presence throughout the Hallowe’en and Guy Fawkes period in preparation for what will be a fun time for a lot of people.”

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We would advise residents who witness acts of vandalism to contact Police Scotland.”
