POLICE are warning Irvine residents to be vigilant following the arrest of two men for theft related incidents in Irvine.

About 4pm on Thursday, November 1 a man is alleged to have attempted to break into a property in Seagate, Irvine with intent to steal from within. Following police enquiries a 45-year-old Irvine man was arrested and charged in relation to this incident.

About 11.50pm hours the same day a 34 year old Stewarton man was arrested and charged in relation to the alleged theft of a motor vehicle following a sneak-in theft at a property in MacKinnon Terrace, in Irvine earlier the same night.

The alleged vehicle was recovered by police after being involved in a collision in the Stewarton area.

Sergeant Jason Peter, of the Irvine Locality Policing Team, said: “These arrests should act as a reminder to local residents and businesses of the need to regularly review their security and to remain vigilant.

With winter rapidly approaching and the clocks going back recently it is getting dark earlier and this adds to the opportunities for a thief to go unnoticed.

“We would appeal to anyone who observes suspicious activity to contact police immediately by calling 101 or dialling 999 in an emergency. We would rather be called and not needed than not called at all - if something doesn’t look right it probably isn’t.

“There are some simple steps we can all take to reduce the opportunity of us falling victim to crime - for the latest crime prevention advice visit the Keep Safe pages of the Police Scotland website.”

Information on those involved in crime in communities can be passed to Police Scotland by calling 101 or by calling the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be maintained.
