The big move from the Irvine tower blocks has already kicked off.

At least eight tenants have already left the Fullarton high rise flats with another about to flit, a council meeting heard. Another six have accepted new homes elsewhere.

Labour councillor Jim Montgomerie said: “Council officers will continue to support the remaining 239 households to ensure their housing needs are met and their rehousing takes place as smoothly as possible.”

The cabinet member for place replied to a question from SNP councillor Christina Larsen seeking an update on rehousing.

The flat residents are being offered free removal costs and someone will put their belongings into boxes and unpack for them.

They will also receive a £1,500 home loss payment. Their replacement properties in areas of their choice will be decorated with new flooring and blinds.

Speaking at this week’s North Ayrshire Council meeting, Councillor Montgomerie said 89 per cent of application forms for new homes have now been completed.

He said: “A dedicated team has been established to give tenants a single point of contact and practical assistance as they prepare to move.”

They will also receive support to deal with utility companies, telephone disconnection and post redirection.

Officials are working with elderly and vulnerable tenants to make sure they receive help during the relocation.

The flats are to be demolished once everyone leaves. It is estimated that the rehousing of tenants could take up to two years.

Bulldozing the tower blocks and building replacement homes is set to cost £47.6 million.

The actual cost of tearing down the five Fullarton blocks of flats would amount to £5 million.

The bulk of the cost – £39.5 million – would go towards building the 275 new homes.

There are plans to build the new homes on the site by 2023.
