WORK will start soon on preservation work on the old Harbourmaster’s House in Saltcoats.

And a group is in the process of being set up to try and restore the site to its former glory.

Councillor Jean McClung, who has been working for over a year to have preservation work carried out, is pleased to inform readers that a contract for this has been awarded, and work will commence shortly.

The SNP Councillor for Saltcoats told the Herald: “I first raised the matter of the condition of this iconic building, pointing out its historic significance, shortly after the council elections last year. This followed representations from constituents, one of whom, the owner of Studio Cobbler, had even offered to carry out restorative work himself!

“I was given an assurance by the council officer responsible that he would see to it that the building’s future would be safeguarded. As has already been reported, work to preserve the house had to be delayed due to the fact that pigeons were nesting inside, and by law could not be disturbed. The ensuing clean-up work, which had to be carried out by specialists, further delayed matters.

“I am delighted that work is finally about to get underway, to ensure that this important part of the maritime history of the town will be preserved for posterity.

“I am also excited about the prospect of helping to form a Friends of Saltcoats Harbour group. A meeting for all those interested in such a project will take place on Wednesday, November 21, at 7pm in the Argyle Centre, Saltcoats. I look forward to meeting all those who would like to see this unique little harbour restored to its former glory.”
