KILWINNING pensioner has said she is living in fear after a heartless crook raided her home and made off with her £2,500 hearing aids.

Margaret Blair’s home was robbed by a drug addict while she was on her way to church.

Jardon Miller, of Hayocks Road, Stevenston, raided her home in the quiet sheltered housing estate in Hawthorn Place, Kilwinning, on November 25.

He helped himself to her handbag, which contained her £2,500 hearing aids, bank cards, cash and driving licence, after letting himself in to her home just minutes after he cycled past her and her niece.

Miller, 50, is now behind bars awaiting sentence after pleading guilty over the raid at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week.

Mrs Blair, 83, says she now bears emotional scars as a result of the raid. But a fundraising page has now been set up to try and raise the money she needs to buy the vital devices.

Speaking from her home, a tearful Mrs Blair said: “I can’t sleep anymore – I’m a nervous wreck. I don’t feel safe in here. Knowing someone has been in your house, going through your stuff, it’s horrible. The other night I was up from 11.30pm to 5am.

“It took me forever to save up for those hearing aids, they cost £2,500. I know that whatever short time I have left of my life I won’t be able to save up enough money to buy those hearing aids again.”

Mrs Blair had left the devices in her home as she did not need them for church, but she struggles to have conversations without them.

It’s thought she had left her door unlocked, not believing she would need to lock it as it is within a sheltered housing estate.

Addict Miller also stole alcohol from the Sainsbury’s in Hamilton Street, Saltcoats, on November 20.

He was detained last month and admitted his guilt during a hearing at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court.

Sentence was deferred for the case to call before Sheriff Elizabeth McFarlane, who is monitoring him over other court cases.

His lawyer Simon Brown said: “He replaced one addiction with another and as a consequence has an addiction to street valium.”

As she remanded Miller in custody, calling for reports, Sheriff McFarlane said: “I can’t have you going in to old ladies’ homes stealing handbags.”
