A controlled explosion was carried out after a suspected ordnance shell was found at Irvine beach.
The Coastguard and Royal Navy were called out this morning (Saturday) after the item was discovered in the water between Irvine and Barassie on Friday.
The area was temporarily cordoned off until the explosion was carried out by the navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit.
An Ardrossan Coastguard spokesman said: “We would like to thank the public for their cooperation during the short time when part of the beach was closed.
”We continue to advice the public if they find something on the beach they think may be a maritime distress flare or piece of military ordnance to keep back, not to touch or move anything, and to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
