A Saltcoats woman who flipped her car on to its roof while she was more than five-times the drink-drive limit and had two young girls in the vehicle had her second lucky escape over the crash this week.

Ellen Moore, of Cumbrae Road, smashed in to two parked cars in Jacks Road with such force her own vehicle flipped on to its roof.

Moore, 43, and the two young girls, aged 10 and 12, had a miracle escape from the horrific car crash, which it’s understood took place after Moore got behind the wheel having drank two bottles of wine. Moore’s firstlucky escape was walking away from the smash.

And her second was escaping a prison sentence when she returned to court this week to learn her fate. Her black Vauxhall Vectra first struck and damaged a black Ford Focus - then smashed in to a black Suzuki Alto, which was also parked.

The smash caused damage to all three cars and flipped Moore’s vehicle on to its roof. It then careered across the road on its roof and came to a crashing halt when it smashed in to a lamp post.

The emergency services raced to the scene and the girls managed to escape without injury. Moore refused to provide a breath test at the scene and was taken to hospital to receive treatment for injuries to her face.

She was later taken to the police station where she finally gave a breath test, revealing she had 119 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath - nearly five-and-a-half times the drink-drive limit of 22mcg.

She was held in police custody after the smash and appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court, striking a deal with prosecutors to plead guilty to three charges in exchange for two being dropped.

She admitted dangerous driving while the kids were inside, causing her car to strike the other vehicles and flip on its roof, failing to provide a breath test at the roadside and drink-driving.

Charges that she did not have a valid driving licence and was uninsured at the time of the smash were dropped.

Sentencing was adjourned for background reports to be prepared and she was released on bail. When contacted at her home after pleading guilty Moore, who was sporting two black eyes, refused to comment on the case.

And, when she returned to the dock to learn her fate, she was spared jail over the smash.

She could have been caged for up to 12 months but was instead placed on a Community Payback Order which will see her carrying out 140 hours’ unpaid work in the community. She was also placed on a Restriction of Liberty Order - a form of house arrest which sees her electronically tagged and having to remain within her home every night for the next 10 weeks.

She was also banned from driving for four years and fined £400.

A source said: “She was catastrophically over the limit at the time of the crash.

“Given the high reading, how bad the crash was and the fact that there were two children in the car, she has been incredibly lucky to have been spared jail.”
