A national comic book convention will be coming to Irvine later this year – and tickets are free.

Comic Con organisers Big Glasgow Comics Page (BGCP) announced last week they would be coming to the Rivergate in April with free tickets now available.

The BGCP Comic Con: Irvine event will be held from 11am to 5pm over Saturday April 13 and Sunday, April 14 in the Rivergate Shopping Centre.

Organiser Scott Gorman said: “As far as we know this is the first one in Irvine. We’ve done a couple in Kilmarnock and we sold out within three weeks in Largs – it’s been received really well in the local areas.

“It’s almost more about pop culture, but it’s called comic con because that’s what people understand it to be. It’s anything you can imagine in terms of superheroes, Super man, Spiderman, Harry Potter and gaming as well.

“The Big Glasgow Comics Page is how it started seven years ago, it was a webpage used for a hangout for people who enjoyed comics.

“The actual events we run are small compared to some larger ones but the whole point is that we come to you. We visit smaller places for people who wouldn’t necessarily travel from Irvine and pay £25 to come to a comic con in Edinburgh.

“There’s loads of stalls with people selling fan art, toys, jewellery t-shirts. And loads of people come along in costumes, and we usually have a competition as well.

“We haven’t got everything confirmed yet but generally our events also have childrens’ entertainers, face painters.

“As we’re holding it in a shopping centre tickets are free but we’ve asked people to register.”
