An Irvine team competed in a 24-hour race at Silverstone to raise funds for four top charities.

Irvine Times:

The Flying Haggis team, which included Alex Milne, David Reid, Robert Jobson, David Christie and David Rybowski as drivers, raced a Citreon C1 at the famous track, which was worked on in Irvine’s R&J Motorsport garage.

Irvine Times:

This was to help raise funds for Alzheimer Scotland, Age Concern Scotland, My Name’5 Doddie and Smiling Through – with the team halfway to raising their £2,000 target.

Irvine Times:

While The Flying Haggis was placed 81st in the end – after a dramatic mid-race engine change – the team are still buzzing from the experience.

Support team member Kristi Hill told the Times: “We all came together through our love of motorsport. All the guys worked to make a cheap Citreon C1 into a race car.

Irvine Times:

“The idea came about after team leader Alex Team decided to raise cash for four charities with a 24-hour race at Silverstone. Alex Milne’s wife passed away and at the funeral Alex came up with a 24-hour endurance race at Silverstone.

“I was bursting with pride the whole time I was there, just how much these guys have accomplished in such a short period of time.

Irvine Times:

“Unfortunately one of the drivers missed that an oil light was on and heard a knocking and had to do full engine replace – which was just unbelievable to watch.

“We all managed to have fun and make so many friendships there and came out as one big family. We’re still totally on a high from it. Just being at Silverstone was just such a surreal experience.

"Our goal is to reach £2,000 and we’re halfway to that. We’re currently doing a silent auction as well.”
