The Ayrshire Champion of Champions for bowling was crowned at the weekend with Blacklands BC’s Scott Spiers romping home to claim the title for the first time.

Played over two Sundays at Ardrossan Bowling Club, the annual contest pits the champions of clubs throughout North, South and East Ayrshire against each other in a knockout format to see who is the best of the best.

There was a lower turnout than usual this year due to changes in schedules but the quality of the bowlers playing over both weekends was clear to see.

The top four players came back for the second weekend to battle out for the trophy, which was once again sponsored by Paul Stevenson Funeral Directors, and it was North versus South as Ross McKnight of Ayr Seafield came up against Jim McCulloch of Irvine Winton with Ross sneaking over the line after a great comeback to win 21-20.

The other semi-final was between home favourite Jamie Campbell and former Scottish singles quarter-finalist Scott Spiers and it was Scott who got in to the lead early and never let Jamie back in to the game, eventually winning 21-13.

This set up an exciting final with Scott and Ross with the sun shining as the players took to the green.

The Kilwinning bowler proved to be too strong on the day and recorded a 21-10 victory over his adversary from Ayr.

Scott was presented with a cheque and the coveted trophy from Pat Lynn of Paul Stevenson Funeral Directors.
