Council drivers have been warned after repeatedly breaking the speed limit – including one going 48mph in a 30 zone.

Drivers were reminded they face prosecution or disciplinary action after regular reports of staff breaking traffic laws were flagged up to council chiefs.

In an urgent memo to all staff earlier in the year Streetscene operations manager Mark McNeil, said: “We are now receiving vehicle speeding reports on a regular basis.

“Speed restrictions are law and could result in prosecution by Police Scotland and also the possibility of disciplinary action by North Ayrshire Council.

“Please be aware of speed restrictions when you are driving, especially in built up areas. One example we received was a member of staff driving 48mph in a 30 zone.”

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We expect all employees who drive in the course of their duties to do so in a courteous, safe and responsible manner.”
