AN IRVINE resident claims he has been the victim of flooding for more than 40 years and is demanding council chiefs take action.

Brian Robertson says his home in Sourlie Terrace in Girdle Toll is prone to flooding and is urging bosses at North Ayrshire Council to reinstall pipes and storm drains.

Brian, 62,who lives at his home with wife Catriona, 58, says the problem has been going on for more than four decades and claims he even has a picture, taken more than 40 years ago, of his daughter, who is now 47, when she was age three floating in a dingy in the street.

Irvine Times:

He told the Times: “It’s ridiculous. There is a serious problem with the drains. I have had them out numerous times and they just fob me off. There is obviously a problem with the drains and with the pipes. I personally think the pipes all need renewed. They are too narrow and can’t cope with the volume of the water when there’s heavy rain.”

Brian says the street most recently flooded last week when torrential rain battered the whole of Ayrshire.

He says water was coming up through his floor boards.

He said: “My whole garden was under water. It was coming in to the house and up through the floorboards. It’s affected the ventilation in the house.

“There is two to three feet of water at times.

“Obviously I called North Ayrshire Council on Sunday and they said there was nothing they could do because everyone was off. I called the police after that and the next thing I knew there was a fire engine down from Johnstone and they pumped all the water away.

“They need to do something about it before there is a major disaster.”

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the issues in the area. We are carrying out investigations to see if there are any blockages in the drainage system and whether any improvements can be made.”
