The council will be launching a new Facebook page for Recycle Week in a push to encourage residents to put the right things in the right bin.

The @NorthAyrshireOfficial Facebook account will launch on Tuesday, September 24 and during the themed week will see organisations across Scotland raise awareness of the importance of recycling.

There will also be recycling reminders issued on social media as well as a ‘Waste Wednesday’ question and answer session on Facebook (@NorthAyrshireOfficial) on September 25 from 12noon-2pm, where residents can put their recycling queries directly to the Waste Team.

To spread the recycling message, the council’s blue and purple bin mascots, Bella and Poppy, will be touring schools.

During Recycle Week, the Council’s waste team is reminding residents how to use their recycling bins correctly. The messages are:
· Blue bin – paper, card and cardboard ONLY
· Purple bin – glass, cans, plastics and cartons ONLY
· Brown bin – food and garden waste ONLY

Councillor Jim Montgomerie, Cabinet Member for Place, said: “This Recycle Week, we’re calling on our residents to join us on our drive to increase recycling.

“While we are amongst the top performing councils for recycling in Scotland, there is more we can do.

“Early indications do show that recycling is on the up in North Ayrshire following this year’s changes to bin collections. But like any change, it can take some time to get used to. All that we ask is that residents put the right stuff in the right bin – glass, cans, cartons and plastics into the purple bin and only paper, card and cardboard in the blue bin. Food and garden waste in the brown bin and only items that cannot be recycled should go into the grey bin.”
