North Ayrshire Council is inviting residents to ‘lumber’ along to its free wood giveaway.

Local residents will be able to collect a share of free wood logs and wood chip from the former Dreghorn Recycling Centre on Thursday, November 21, 10am-2pm, and Friday, November 22 10am-2pm.

The woodchip can be used to spruce up gardens by using it for landscaping, pathways and surfacing play areas while the wood logs can be used for a variety of projects.

The event forms part of the Council’s focus on sustainability. By giving away the wood they’ve collected for local reuse, the Council can avoid the environmental impact and costs associated with transporting and processing the wood for recycling or energy recovery.

The wood has been collected as part of the Council’s regular maintenance work to trim and remove trees.

David Hammond, Head of Service (Interim) (Commercial) said: “This wood giveaway is a great opportunity for residents and would encourage all those who could make use of the wood to head along and grab a share.”

“By reusing the wood our officers have collected as part of their everyday work duties, we are minimising our environmental impact by using it to stage a worthwhile community event

“It is very much part of our Council commitment to sustainability.”

Wood supplies are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. In the interest in fairness, there will be limits to the quantity of wood collected per person.

You must bring your own bags or storage boxes.

Council officers will be on site throughout the day and will require to see proof of North Ayrshire residency, such as a driver’s licence or utility bill, before allowing entry.
