A Kilwinning man has warned people to be vigilant after witnessing a man trying to break into homes and cars.

James Stevens claims he saw the would-be thief try the handles of houses and vehicles on Glenberivie Drive and Turnberry Court in Kilwinning early this morning.

Mr Stevens said: "When I came out of the house I noticed the guy walking past.

"It was 4am and he was all covered up.

"He went across to my neighbour's across the street in Turnberry Court and I knew he didn't live there.

"He didn't see me. I stood outside and I watched him try the motor and then he went round by the garages and that's when I called the police."

Mr Stevens was leaving for work at around 4am and when he called the police he said three response vehicles were there within minutes.

Mr Stevens, who works in Linwood, said: "He came out from behind the garages just as the police came round the corner.

"They searched for him but couldn't find him.

"It's just to tell people to be vigilant, make sure their doors are locked."

North Ayrshire Police posted a warning on social media this morning urging motorists to ensure their vehicles are secured.

This follows a number of reported incidents in the last few days.

Chief Inspector Brian Shaw said: “Enquiries are ongoing at present to identify those responsible, however I would remind all car owners to lock and secure their vehicles when not in use.

"Please also make sure that all property such as bags, purses, sat navs and phones are not on display.”
