Plans have been lodged to build 77 new affordable homes in Irvine.

Irvine Housing Association has submitted a planning application to build the dozens of properties to the north of Tarryholme Pond in the town.

Roads, footpaths, open space and landscaping are also part of the proposed scheme, which is a mile outside the town centre.

New tenants can choose between two-storey houses, cottage flats and bungalows.

A high number of properties will be suitable for people with mobility issues and those using wheelchairs.

The bid is phase two of an affordable housing estate in the area with construction of another 87 housing association homes nearing finish.

A children’s play area with balance beams and log steps will also be included in the development.

McTaggart Construction has been hired to carry out the building work.

A design statement lodged with North Ayrshire Council said the latest estate would suit a wide range of tenants.

It said: “The position of each housing type has been carefully considered within the site and the resulting positions of house types ensure that a diverse community of residents with varying needs are able to contribute to its vitality, including families, with children, older persons, veterans, wheelchair users, couples or single persons.”

The statement added: “The scale of the development and the nature of its appearance will successfully integrate within the existing surrounding environment, with these well designed proposals enhancing the architectural characteristics of Tarryholme.”
