FOOTBALL daft Lochlan has been crowned Cumnock’s Young Citizen of the year.

The inspiring Cumnock lad had a fantastic year after speaking out for mental health and type 1 diabetes.

He was left stunned after Scotland rallied round his mission to do a giant stadium tour to promote the issues while raising money.

The 10-year-old who suffers from type 1 diabetes struggled with depression last year and was inspired to organise a major football stadium to raise awareness and cash for charity.

But the football daft lad was shocked at the amount of support he was bombarded with, which helped him smash his enormous fundraising target of £10,000.

It comes after Lochlan had a serious football injury last year that put him on a downward spiral as he was forced to sit on the sidelines for months.

After feeling detached from his friends and unable to play football he became isolated and withdrawn causing a massive shift in his personality.

But his mum said ‘she got her son back’ when he finally broke down and told her how bad he had been feeling while going through his recovery.

He immediately felt a massive weight lifted off his shoulders and wanted others to know much much sharing your problems and talking about mental health can help.

He marched around stadiums in Cumnock, Aberdeen, Dundee, Livingston, Motherwelll, Hamilton, Kilmarnock, and Glasgow.

The eager schoolboy wants to continue encouraging people to talk about their mental health and help people with type 1 diabetes through sport.

He was also hailed ‘community hero’ after smashing his projects last year.

Lochalns mum Lesley said:

“Lochlan received an amazing phone call this evening to say that he has won Cumnock Young Citizen of the Year 2019/20.

“This boy is an inspiration and is continuing to change the world! I don’t have the words to describe how proud I am of my wee hero.

“Well done wee man...keep smashing it!”

Chair of the Youth Committee: “Lochlan had gone above and beyond any other candidate.

“He spoke about mental health as well which is at forefront in society right now.

“He over came that as a young boy and thought of others in the community which really epitomises what the award stands for.

“It is about helping other people and he showed that there’s another way out at the end of the tunnel.”
