DEFIANT campaigners say it’s business as usual - despite an appeal being lodged against the decision to reject a community asset transfer (CAT) of Muirhead Activity Centre.

Dundonald Gymnastics Club (DGC) recently appealed to the Scottish Government against December’s vote by South Ayrshire Council to reject their proposal to take over the facility.

They say: “Our Business Plan clearly shows that we are planning to increase the range of exercise-related services available to the local community including Keep-fit, Cheer and Dance accessible to all including, Baby and Toddler, Pre-school, Adult and disabilities. We are committed to developing a range of community-based services alongside gymnastic related activities.”

However Muirhead Tenants and Residents’ Association Board Member David O’Neill admits the group are totally focused on making the centre work.

He said: “This is an unwelcome distraction for us, it’s like a fly you just can’t get away. The Gymnastics Club had their proposal rejected and there was a decisive vote against it.

“But for the past few months we have been working to maximise the use of Muirhead Activity Centre.

“Quite a few new groups have been set up, including one for Walking Football, which has been popular and we also have a new badminton group and a new Active Schools handball group.

“There has also been talk of a group for children with autism and it would be good if that came off.

“The centre has been busy and that’s encouraging.

“We always welcome ideas for new groups.

“Council staff have been working hard with us to expand the facilities as our members are all volunteers. We are being as positive as possible and hopefully the Scottish Government will back South Ayrshire Council’s decision but will keep working hard.”

Troon Councillor Philip Saxton admits he too is “disappointed” DGC have appealed.

He said: “Muirhead Activity Centre belongs to the people and we are working to help improve the facilities.

“I’m sure the Scottish Office Reporter will be coming down to discuss things. But I hope the Scottish Government back our decision.”
