A DIAMOND couple from Irvine raised £460 for two cancer charities as they celebrated 60 happy years together.

John, 86, and Davina Smith, 84, both enjoyed the special occasion on Friday, February 21 in Irvine’s Riverside Lodge.

The Castlepark Crescent couple held the gathering surrounded by friends and family ahead of the big anniversary on February 26 this week.

Daughter Jacqui Smith said: “It went really well, my mum and dad loved it, they even stayed up until after midnight until the end.

“They’ve got four daughters so we all went and 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. We had a meal then a disco and the Provost turned up with some flowers and whisky.

“My mum and dad moved down to Birmingham in 1979 when my dad who worked in Irvine got a job at Rover and moved all the family down. He always said when he retired they were going to move back up there.”

Instead of gifts, the couple appealed for donations to Cancer Research UK and Irvine and Troon Cancer Care , raising more than £460 on the night.
